Before Your Chicks Arrive
Make sure your brooder is set up before pickup day.
You’ll need:
-
A draft-free brooder (stock tank, tote, or box)
-
Heat source (heat lamp or brooder plate)
-
Chick starter feed
-
Feeder & Waterer
-
Bedding (pine shavings work best)
Feeding Your Chicks
-
Feed chick starter from day one
-
Keep feed available at all times
-
No treats until chicks are at least 2 weeks old
Water Basics
-
Fresh, clean water at all times
-
Use shallow waterers to prevent drowning (add marbles or stones for extra safety)
-
Change water daily (or more often if it gets dirty)
Bedding & Cleanliness
-
Use pine shavings (avoid cedar)
-
Keep bedding dry and fluffy
-
A clean brooder helps prevent odor, illness, and pasty butt
Handling & Socialization
-
Handle chicks gently and often
-
Move slowly and calmly
-
This helps create friendly adult chickens
